Social activities and social interaction are extremely important for the resident that suffers from memory loss. The resident’s preferences and hobbies need to be shared with the facility where they live so they may have opportunity to continue to do what they like or what they used to like in the past. Working with the family to learn what the resident enjoys is essential.
Socializing in a facility involves communicating the scheduled functions where they can be seen by family and residents. Scheduled activities, such as Bingo every Friday and sing-along every Tuesday, are important for planning for staff and residents. Memory challenged residents need opportunities for mental stimulation every day. A good facility will provide these activities and try to engage all the residents in some enjoyable event.
Good food goes along with good presentation of meals and mealtime conversation. Residents should be given the best of both. Holiday events are always celebrated with food as are birthdays and certain meal traditions like ice cream socials and pancake breakfasts. Brunch, coffee time, or tea and biscuits are other examples of socializing with food that residents look forward to doing.
Games such as board games, hall bowling, rhythm circle, spiritual reading, listening to music, guest musicians and speakers are some offerings that residents come to expect in a quality facility. Arts and crafts, gardening, physical exercise (in some form even if it is chair exercise) is especially important for the mind and body.
Often a facility has a designated staff member who provides many of the activities. A meeting with this individual is helpful in that the resident’s interests can be shared. Staff should be engaging and aware of ways to promote social interaction. Residents need a cheerful environment and the staff who provide that kind of conversation and keen observation are truly key to a healthy living space.
