Respite Care

What is respite care?

Respite care is understanding that the caregiver role is about shifting the focus to make someone else’s needs a priority. Caring for a loved one can be a rewarding experience but depending on the level of care required, the caregiver might rarely be able to step outside of the supporting role. The role of “caregiver” can take a physical, mental and emotional toll.  Unfortunately, this can have negative consequences on both caretaker and their loved ones and family.

Respite care allows for someone else to care of the patient’s needs allowing the caregiver a period of time to maintain a healthy balance.  This way the caretaker can continue to enjoy their own quality of life and enjoy the time spent with their loved one. It’s okay to need and want to take a break. At Kingwood Memory and Assisted Living we are more than happy to offer this type of care allowing the caretaker to reduce stress and avoid caregiver burn out. It enables them to take an overdue vacation, take time to for themselves or attend to any personal matters. Thereafter, returning to the role refreshed.

We know that taking the respite care route may come across as “self-serving”, but reconsidering, any of the following signs could be a negative indicator applying to a caregiver:

  • Lack of sleep from being available at all times?
  • Little or no physical exercise?
  • Social Isolation?
  • Financial stress from missing work?
  • Burnout for caring for a loved one, not finding the joy in it any longer?
  • Less time with family and friends because care is becoming more demanding?
  • Depression, frustration and resentment of the situation?

According to AARP, over 32 million Americans provide care for a loved one. If you’re in charge of someone else’s care, you are not alone and we are here to assist you in your journey with your loved one. Handing the reins over allows you to take a break, letting you recharge, ease stress, and avoid caregiver burnout. This can also improve the quality of time spent with your loved one.
