Signs it is Time to Transition to Memory Care

Changes in behavior and self-care can be very gradual in individuals who may have a form a dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. It can be difficult for family members to decide when to transition their loved one to a memory care community. Specifically, family members should look for signs that a family member’s health, safety, or finances are irregular and seek specialized help from a physician in order to determine what level of care is appropriate for their loved one.

A few signs family members can look for are difficulty or inability to manage financial obligations. Unfortunately, this can make your loved one a victim of financial abuse. Lapses in health care or self care are also warning signs that your family member may need a higher level of care. Change in eating habits, difficulty managing timing and dosages of prescription medications, and a decrease in regular bathing or grooming habits can all be signs that your loved one may be experiencing a cognitive decline. Additional warning signs to look for are bruises, balance issues and falls. While these issues can sometimes be caused by certain medications, it is something worth discussing with a physician as it poses a great safety risk.

Caring for a family member or loved one with dementia can be both physically and mentally exhausting. It is important to constantly evaluate the physical and mental health of both your loved one, as well as the individuals caring for them.
